Understanding steroid esters


What is esters? why that matter to us to understand the ester type?

Let’s take theĀ  base compound. called Testosterone, for men every cycle have to include Testosterone.
Now, the longevity. longevity will be define by the ester time. ester is a compound that attached to the base material – in this case Testosterone, it allowed to release the material to the bloodstream slower. if you would inject Testosterone base in one shot, the Testosterone will be available in the bloodstream immediately. The ester will slow the release to the bloodstream in small amounts, but equal. that will define the half life of the product.

Let’s divide the esters to groups:

Long acting esters for example:

Enanthate, Cypionate, Decanoate – these are long acting esters. allow to release the base material for longer time. half life 7-10 days.

Short acting esters for example:

Propionate, Acetate, PhenylPropionate, Isocaproate – half life 1-3 days depends on the ester.

So why that important to us?

Let’s take some pros and cons of long acting esters:


  • Less injections, usually 2 times per week.
  • Constant release of the compound in the bloodstream for longer time.


  • Gain water retention more than using short acting ester.
  • Ester weight is higher than short acting esters.

Now let’s understand what is ester weight.

Let’s take for example Testosterone base 100mg. it called Testosterone Suspension and it contains pure 100mg. the minus like we already explained, it released in a minutes all of the 100mg in the bloodstream. we’ll have in to inject every day!!

Let’s take testosterone Enanthate 100mg. in every 100mg of this compound, the base material is 70mg and Ester weight is 30mg. so actually when we inject 100mg Testosterone Enanthate, the body absorb 70mg Testosterone base.
Let’s take testosterone Propionate 100mg. in every 100mg of this compound, the base material is 80mg and Ester weight is 20mg. so actually when we inject 100mg Testosterone Enanthate, the body absorb 80mg Testosterone base.

Now we understand that there is a trade off between using short acting compounds. we have more base compound, but injection frequently will be higher like EOD (every other day means, day on day off)

If I’m going to plan a bulking cycle, I don’t care of water retention. so I may use long ester products, but I’ll have to inject more from the product to get the base material.
While if I’m going to plan a cutting cycle, It matter for me the water retention. I’ll use a short acting ester compounds and less mg compare to the long acting ester compounds.
